In December,
my step-daughter came from LA to visit for the holidays. While
immersed in a game of Scrabble, she mentioned that she was
auditioning for an independent film called "Two
Million Stupid Women" and that she needed a little
help.
The character
she was auditioning for was a drunk young woman at a party
singing a quasi-bitter, quasi-vulnerable, a cappella song
about a guy that had dumped her. The problem was that while
there were words in the script, there
wasn't a melody to sing. So, she asked me to look at the
"lyrics" and see if I could make some sense of them.
I love
a challenge, so I took to the task with a certain fervency
normally reserved for religious
fanatics. After a couple of hours, I was able to martial
the words into a semblance of cadence, rhyme, and yes it sounded
like a song. When I played it for Shelley,
she was delighted.

Not
these producers, please.

She auditioned
a few days after returning and KILLED it! She got the gig
and began filming in mid-February. When they filmed, she played
it up way over the top and got a standing ovation for her
comedic reading of the scene. The story should likely end
there, but apparently she pitched the idea of a "serious"
version of the song she sang too.
The producer
called last week to say that he liked the idea and that it
might be included in the ending credits. He asked for a demo
of what we imagined.
A few
days ago, Shelley and I went into Music
Master Studios and recorded a rough demo of "Everybody
Thinks I'm Wonderful." Shelley sang and I played guitar,
bass, and mandolin. Here's hoping the producer likes what
he hears! Here's also hoping that the film gets into Sundance!
I'll keep
you posted as the story develops...
Note:
We got some pictures
from the sessions, if you're interested.
Note:
I used to love Dire Straits. Mark Knopler is such an amazing
guitarist with such a unique style! .Making
Movies and Love
Over Gold have been favorites of mine for a very long
time. The title of this missive is in reference to a favorite
album of mine. Of course, All
This Roadrunning is a beautiful CD from Mark Knopfler
and Emmylou too. Anything including Emmylou gets my attention!
Yum!
