Book Faded Brown

Talking with friends recently, my blog about Desert Island CDs came up and I was asked why I didn't take a turn at books. Why not?

Rules of the game? No multiple volumes. No silly uses of Kindle or other electronic medium to circumvent the game. Just a simple list of the five books you'd like to have on a desert island with you.

Obviously, everyone will approach this with different thinking. Some may be searching for inspiration, others escape, still others comfort. Here are my thoughts in no particular order:

Like Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
Cider House Rules by John Irving
Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon
Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut
On the Road by Jack Kerouac

Honorable mentions include:

A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley
Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood

Of course, the rules of the game don't allow me to bring one of my all time favorites, The Lord of the Rings. I also haven't brought any history books or how-to-survive-on-a-desert-island books either. Perhaps I'll rethink the list soon.

Any thoughts of your own? Feel free to email me!

Note: Book Faded Brown is a song from a later incarnation of the Band featuring Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Garth Hudson. It can be found on several CDS, but originally was released on Jubilation. Don't miss Levon Helm's newest release either.
